How long have you been in business?
We have been sourcing products and services in China, with offices in Houaton and Shanghai since 2002
What is your primary product or service?
We are a service mainly and do consulting as well. We like to think if ourselves as personal shoppers in China for corporations. Avela does product development in China as well, and our typical orders range between from between $25,000 to $200,000 per order.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
We use to be an advertising agency from 1985 until 2002. What changed our focus was a trip I (Gary Young CEO) made to China in 2001. I realized that China was a place I could better serve my existing customers by sourcing the products they are already buying through distributors, directly from the Chinese factories that make these products, saving them money. I love travel, fell in love with Chinese culture and decided to make a dramatic change in my business. I have never regretted that decision for even a minute. I love what we do.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
First, our business model is transparent. We are not middlemen. We are liaisons who represent our clients in China. Our clients are aware of who is making their goods and often visit the factory to strengthen the relationships we are creating. Our clients understand our value proposition of feet on the ground in China, negotiating Chinese to Chinese on their behalf and building lasting relationships.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We are in Houston and Shanghai. We plan to grow/scale our business but will maintain our two presence in Houston and Shanghai.

What type of payments do you accept?
Most of our transactions large and are either by check or wire.
Which areas do you service?
Manufacturing mostly but have found ourselves in multiple industry including food service wholesale distributors and retailers.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
Avela Corporation is wholly owned by me, Gary Young.
What are your hours of operation?
Interesting question. The Houston office is 9 to 5 and the same for the Shanghai office, but on the other side of the world. But it is not unusual to find me working on line from 10:00 pm to 12:00 pm communicating with the Shanghai office.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
